Process and Manufacturing of Steel

1. Inspection

Inspection of billets chemical composition using fully computerized Spectra machine. The hot rolled bar that leaves the final mill stand is rapidly quenched by a special water spray system. This hardens the surface of the bar to a depth optimized for each section through the formation of martensitic rim. The core remains hot and austenitic.

2. Reheating Furnace

In steel plants reheating furnaces are used in hot rolling mills to heat the steel stock (Billets, blooms or slabs) to temperatures of around 1250 degree C which is suitable for plastic deformation of steel and hence for rolling in the mill. The heating process in a reheating furnace is a continuous process where the steel stock is charged at the furnace entrance, heated in the furnace and discharge at the furnace exit.

3. Roughing Stand

Rolled billet upto 25mm dia size. One of the key factors in the roughing stand both in the production of high-strength thin steel plates and in preparing steel plates for tube production is the precise temperature control during the forming process and the optimisation of reversing passes. What is required here is the plant engineer’s extensive expertise.

4. Intermediate Stand

A steel plant has to dispatch products to forty four stockyards from a range of over hundred stock keeping units. The railways, who transport the steel, would like the steel plant to move the steel in a rake load since it is operationally beneficial. On the other hand, the steel plant prefers to move the steel with a shipment size as small as a wagon load.

5. Continuous Stand

Rolled billet upto 8 mm dia size.
